The Rumor* Of: “Friend of Dorothy”

Friend(s) of Dorothy (FOD) was a slang term used within the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual community of the 1950’s. 
Judy Garland was one of the first celebrities to embrace her gay fans and the Wizard of Oz was viewed as a “gay” fairy tale for many queer Americans at the time. The Stonewall Riots also occurred immediately after Judy Garland’s passing while many people were in mourning. Some claim that police brutality, homophobia and Garland’s death were all triggers for fighting back the night of the riots. 
The phrase was often used as the password to enter gay establishments.

*Friend of Dorothy may have roots as “Friend of Dorothy Parker” before becoming a slang term for the L. Frank Baum character.

“Science Experiment”: Term for a person’s first queer* experience with another member of the LGBTQ* community who has had previous experience. The term is used within the community both negatively and positively.
“Chemist”: A self-identified person in the LGBTQ* community who often has relationships/experiences with individuals who have never been with someone who identifies on the LGBTQ* spectrum. A chemist is usually known for short term relationships/experiences with individuals. Sometimes chemists are referred to as a “safety.”

Gynaeotrope A lesbian. 

Kurt Hiller - Political essayist, Marxist and advocated who survived the concentration camps.

** Both terms:  Kurt Hiller suggested these terms in 1946, because of what he considered negative connotations of the word “homosexual.” Neither term ever really caught on.

When light travels and hits glass (or a prism) the direction moves from a straight line to a bent line. Red is the least bent, violet/lavender the most.

“Drag Queen” — believed to be the shorten term for “dresses like a girl.” — Term first appeared in print in 1914 though believed to have been a theatre term since the 1870s.

“Drab” — slang term around the same time as “drag queen.” — “Drab” short for “dresses like a boy.”

Cool Story (Les)Bro

“Lesbro” — the male version of a “fruit fly”/”fag hag.” A male (usually heterosexual) who spends a large portion of his time with lesbians/queer women.

Clit Split — female equivalent of “cock block.” When one female steps between the social interaction of another female.
