LGBTQ* (Folk) Artists and Songs You May Have Missed

Jen Foster — “She”

I have heard it said so many times, “Love is blind”
So why are you staring?
You say that love is all we need, well
Does that apply to me?
‘Cause I have found someone
That I think is beautiful
And I have fallen in love
And I’m telling you

She
Means everything to me
She
Makes me feel nothing else matters
Not even what the world thinks of me

They told me when I was a little girl, “Love’s a pearl -
You’re lucky if you find it,
So share that precious beauty with the world,”
Now suddenly they say I’ve got to hide it
But I have found true love
And there is nothing you can do
Just try and stop me, just try and stop us
Good luck to you, ‘cause

She
Means everything to me
She
Makes me feel nothing else matters
Not even what the world thinks of me
(She…she…she…)

It’s simple as can be
I love her, she loves me

This is what everybody dreams of
There’s nothing to be afraid of, there’s nothing to be afraid of, after all it’s
Only love
‘cause

She
Means everything to me
She
Makes me feel nothing else matters

QUEER* ANTHEMS 101

In honor of Washington’s Marriage Equality / Marriage Licenses

Heather Small - “Proud” (Peter Presta QaF Remix)

I look into the window of my mind
Reflections of the fears I know I’ve left behind
I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I am on my way
Can’t stop me now
And you can do the same

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It’s never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

“Girl from the Gutter” — Kina

Queer Anthems 101

For all the things you said I’d never do
For all the things you said that were untrue
For all the times you made me feel alone
Said I’d never make it on my own

(chorus 1)
Things are lookin’ up for me now
Seems like Karma’s makin’ its rounds
Its my turn now, won’t be held down no
Karma’s gonna visit you too
You gotta pay for the things you put me through
I hope you do, I hope you do, yeah, yeah

(chorus 2)
I hope your hell is filled with magazines
And on every page you see a big picture of me
And under every picture the caption should read
Not bad for a girl from the gutter like me

(Personal Note: When I was coming out, this song was the lesbian/queer* women anthem in the clubs in Louisiana. I think we all have those songs we hold on to long after the glitter has washed away. -Rebecca)

Ani DiFranco

Queer Anthems 101

“In or Out” — Ani DiFranco

(bisexual/pansexual pride)

guess there’s something wrong with me
guess I don’t fit in
no one wants to touch it
no one knows where to begin
I’ve got more than one membership
to more than one club
and I owe my life
to the people that I love

somedays the line I walk
turns out to be straight
other days the line tends to
deviate
I’ve got no criteria for sex or race
I just want to hear your voice
I just want to see your face

their eyes are all asking
are you in, or are you out
and I think, oh man,
what is this about?
tonight you can’t put me
up on any shelf

Comin’ a time, B.D. women ain’t gonna do need no men
Oh they way treat us is a lowdown and dirty sin

B.D. women, you sure can’t understand

They got a head like a sweet angel and they walk just like a natural man

B.D. women, they all done learnt their plan

“Coming Out At Christmas” — London’s Gay Men’s Chorus 2006

A Christmas Carol To Start Your Holiday Season.

To the tune of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”
Coming Out on Christmas Day
I intend to drop a bomb,
On my dear old dad and mom.
For this year, without a doubt,
Is the Christmas I come out.

First I’ll get their full attention.
Then I’ll drop a subtle mention
“Lovely tree, and by the way,
Some of my closest friends are gay.”

That should do the job OK,
When I come out on Christmas Day.

Oh say can you see it now?
Watch my parents have a cow.
Or perhaps, if fate is kind,
They’ll insist that they don’t mind.

Then they’ll say “We always guessed,
After all, look how you’re dressed.
Seven earrings in each ear?
We’re not quite that dense, my dear.”

They’ll be talking, anyway,
When I come out on Christmas Day.

Coming out to everyone
Makes the winter doldrums fun.
It’s a noble thing to do.
Why don’t you come on out too?

Make a choice, damn consequence.
Lift your voice, get off the fence.
Shout it from the highest roof
Gay is great, and you’re the proof.

Make this Christmas bright and gay.
Come on out on Christmas Day.
