Other Student: If one more man does something stupid, I am going to become a lesbian.
Me: *silence*
Other Student: Seriously. I'm so sick of the stupidity of people. I am going full on gay.
Me: *silence*
Other Student: It would make my life so much easier.
Me: *silence*
Other Student: What?
Me: There is nothing simple about dating someone of the same gender.
Other Student: Well you know what I mean -
Me: That's like saying "I hate to hike. I'm going to go climb Mt. Everest on my day off."
Other Student: *silence*
--I realize this is not a typical KNOWhomo post. I feel many of us have experienced this. I believe many of us do this (substituting "I'll be straight/asexual/a guy/a girl"). I think it is important we are aware of language. I am not saying that every word should be monitored, I am simply saying we should all KNOW our language has power and strength to promote stereotypes.
