California becomes first state in nation to ban ‘gay cure’ therapy for children
By James Eng, NBC News
Updated at 12:34 p.m. ET: California has become the first state in the nation to ban therapy that tries to turn gay teens straight.
Gov. Jerry Brown announced Sunday that he has signed Senate Bill 1172, which prohibits children under age 18 from undergoing “sexual orientation change efforts.”  The law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, prohibits state-licensed therapists from engaging in these practices with minors.
“Governor Brown today reaffirmed what medical and mental health organizations have made clear: Efforts to change minors’ sexual orientation are not therapy, they are the relics of prejudice and abuse that have inflicted untold harm on young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians,” Clarissa Filgioun, board president of Equality California, said in a press release.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARVEY MILK.

(May 22, 1930)

“Somewhere in Des Moines or San Antonio there is a young gay person who all of a sudden realizes that he or she is gay; knows that if their parents find out they will be tossed out of the house, their classmates will taunt the child, and the Anita Bryant’s and John Briggs’ are doing their part on TV.
And that child has several options: staying in the closet, and suicide. And then one day that child might open the paper that says ‘Homosexual elected in San Francisco’ and there are two new options: the option is to go to California, or stay in San Antonio and fight. Two days after I was elected I got a phone call and the voice was quite young. It was from Altoona, Pennsylvania. And the person said ‘Thanks’.

And you’ve got to elect gay people; so that thousands upon thousands like that child know that there is hope for a better world; there is hope for a better tomorrow. Without hope, not only gays, but those who are blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us’s; without hope the us’s give up.
I know that you can’t live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you, and you, and you, and you have got to give them hope.”

do you know any history on 1970's Homosexuality in Los Angeles? (any websites/documentaries?). Im doing a class project on that and its pretty tricky to find things since most of the liberation movement took place in SF and NY. Thanks btw!

I will continuing my research on this and let you know more as I learn more myself.

I know that the riots at the Black Cat Tavern often goes by undisclosed (there is a brief post on it HERE) but that occurred before Stonewall.

Since you are focusing in Los Angeles, I would also recommend checking into film history. The Hayes code was almost all but obsolete minus the ban on homosexuals in film. There is a great book by Vito Russo called The Celluloid Closet and HBO made it into a documentary in the 90s. You can watch most it on YouTube (and there is a brief post about it HERE).

The Los Angeles Times (along with the New York magazine) both refused to take out ads which catered to queer* clientele.  There was political backlash against both publications with threats from sponsors, corporations and officials.

For politics and gay raids, check out William “Wild Bill Parker” Park and the surge in arrests in the late 60s for perversion.

Also, there is a book out called Gay L.A.: A History of Sexual Outlaws, Power Politics and Lipstick Lesbians that may be so some help. (Amazon link HERE, but I would see if you could do a inner-library loan with your school.)

Hope this helped some.

Keep On, Keeping On!

LGBTQ* “Rush” of History
“Mountain” Charlie Darkey Parkhurst
Legend states that Parkhurst started his young life by running away from his parents, being placed in an orphanage and escaped with only his trousers and shirt to set out as a farm and ranch hand. From there, Parkhurst went on to work his way towards California as a stagecoach driver.
Parkhurst was one of the toughest stagecoach drivers to ever work for Wells Fargo and command the mountains during the California gold rush. It is even said the Parkhurst shot and killed at least one bandit during the rush. Respected by miners and Wells Fargo, feared by those who upset the balance of the miners and a man of legend, Parkhurst was one of the most known individuals in California in the mid-1860s.
Upon death, as neighbors prepared Parkhurst’s body for burial, it was discovered that Parkhurst was born biologically female. This information was not shared with newspapers or others. Both Parkhurst’s neighbors and doctor only shared with others that they would remember Parkhurst as one of the most impressive drivers and men of their time.
Parkhurst has since made one of California’s “first-to-do-so” lists. Parkhurst is credited as being California’s first female born individual to cast a vote in an election (1868).

Appeals court rejects California’s Proposition 8

By the CNN Wire Staff
(updated 3:14 PM EST, Tue February 7, 2012)

San Francisco (CNN) — A federal appeals court ruled against California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday, arguing the ban unconstitutionally singles out gays and lesbians for discrimination.
In a split decision, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the state’s Proposition 8 “works a meaningful harm to gays and lesbians” by denying their right to civil marriage in violation of the 14th Amendment. Supporters of same-sex marriages cheered the decision when it was announced outside the courthouse Tuesday morning.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, California,” one man in the crowd shouted when the decision was released.
