Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876) American Acress of the Stage Opening words to Charlotte Cushman’s memoirs reads, “I was born a tomboy.” Cushman goes on to write when she was a kid, she would crack open the heads of her dolls to examine their brains and try to understand their thoughts. Romantically, she was linked to: American painter Rosalie Scully, English poet Eliza Cooke and American sculptor Emma Stebbins (with whom she had a 20 year relationship)
