Definition: BUGGERY is the criminal act of penetration between two men or a man and an animal. It was adopted into English law by Henry VIII in 1533 (as the Buggery Law).
Punishable by death, the penalty for committing an act of buggery was reduced to ten years to life in prison in 1861.
"Buggery" is derived from the French word "bougres," meaning "heretical."
