LGBTQ* Slogan and Flag History The Rainbow/Pride Flag is credited as being created by Gilbert Baker in 1978. The flag debuted at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade of the same year.  The original flag had eight stripes: pink (sexuality) — red (life) —orange (healing) — yellow (sunlight) — green (nature) — turquoise (magic) — indigo/blue (serenity) — violet (spirit) Pink and turquoise have since been dropped.
